“Let there be light!”

These were the inaugural words spoken by God in the Bible, cast into the midst of darkness, chaos, and void. With that command, light vanquished darkness—and it continues to do so to this day. Haiti is no exception. Into the darkness, into the chaos, into the void, we proclaim light!

I recently reminisced with Sister Phyllis about a prayer meeting we participated in over 40 years ago. It was a scorching afternoon in 1983 at Phyllis’s residence in the Fontamara area of Port-au-Prince. I had the honor of joining a prayer session alongside Sister Phyllis, Sister Boudreaux, and Sister Eda Chang, all of whom were missionaries to Haiti. Since then, both Sister Boudreaux and Sister Chang have passed on to Glory.

For about an hour during that meeting, these seasoned prayer warriors fervently repeated a single verse, akin to relay runners passing a baton among themselves. The verse was Psalms 2:8: “Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.” This experience profoundly taught a young 24-year-old the meaning of “pressing through,” a lesson that has never faded.

While speaking with Sister Phyllis today, she reaffirmed that promise and declared, “God still reigns and rules with His sovereign authority over Haiti.” She expressed feeling safe under God’s watchful eye, despite the prominence of gangs in the news. While the gangs may capture media attention, it is God and His ways that make the eternal headlines.

Vigilante groups have emerged in her vicinity, striving to safeguard their community. Some of Sister Phyllis’s own young men were even setting out to find a few gallons of gasoline. Through it all, she remains optimistic, celebrating God’s faithfulness in such tumultuous times. God’s light persists in piercing through the darkness, still bestowing “nations as an inheritance.” It’s clear that Sister Phyllis, along with those standing by her in Haiti, still believe the promise and claim Haiti as their inheritance.

We will continue to provide updates as we learn more. We are deeply grateful for every prayer and contribution. Through them, God continues to illuminate Haiti with His light!
